Jaw Clenching and the Fight-or-Flight Response

Chronic jaw tension often points to a nervous system stuck in fight mode. Trauma, especially early childhood trauma or chronic stress, can cause the body to remain in a state of muscular readiness—bracing against danger. The jaw, being a central tension point, holds a lot of that pressure.

Jaw clenching can be a silent, physical expression of fear, anger, or a need to stay in control. It’s common among people who’ve experienced emotional neglect, relationship trauma, or betrayal.

Soothing Your Jaw, Calming Your Body

  • Try progressive muscle relaxation: Bring attention to your jaw, shoulders, and neck. Practice unclenching intentionally—several times a day.

     

  • Use warmth and massage: Apply a warm compress before bed. Massage your jaw gently with your fingertips or a gua sha tool.
  • Address emotional suppression: Many people who clench have learned to “hold in” their emotions. In individual counseling, we gently explore those inner patterns and release what’s being held.
  • Night guards are helpful—but not the whole answer: While a mouthguard protects your teeth, trauma therapy helps protect your nervous system.
