About Dr. Brian McKenzie

My approach is collaborative, educational, and change-focused. I see therapy as a place where you can feel heard and supported, while also learning practical tools to help you better understand your emotions, patterns, choices, and relationships.

Clients can expect me to be both a listener and an educator. I believe education can be deeply empowering; when you understand what is happening inside of you, you often have more choice in how you respond. Depending on your needs, I may help you identify thought patterns, build coping skills, use reflection exercises, practice emotional regulation, or track thoughts and behaviors in a way that supports real-life change.

I also want clients to feel at ease in therapy. I know from personal experience that it can be difficult to be open and honest with another person. When appropriate, I use warmth and humor to help reduce tension and make therapy feel more human and approachable.

One client experience that has stayed with me involved working with someone who believed his life was over after circumstances prevented him from pursuing a career path he had deeply wanted. Together, we focused on making life just 1% better at a time. Over time, he built new goals, new friendships, and a renewed sense of pride in himself. That experience continues to shape how I think about therapy: change does not always happen all at once, but small steps can become deeply meaningful over time.

Whether we are working on depression, trauma, suicidal thoughts, emotional intensity, family conflict, or the transition into adulthood, I will meet you with empathy, honesty, and a strong commitment to your safety and growth.

My Background & Experience

II hold a Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology from Alliant International University in San Francisco, California, where I trained from August 2017 to August 2022. I also hold a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Indiana University and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Purdue University in West Lafayette.

I began working with children and families with autism in 2016, and in 2017 began providing therapy as part of my professional clinical training in community centers, geriatric therapeutic support centers, and both inpatient and outpatient hospital settings. I completed my doctorate in 2022 and became licensed in 2024. Since becoming licensed, I have worked in hospital-based outpatient care supporting individuals and families affected by severe mental illness.

EMDR therapy can help you overcome trauma symptoms

Much of my clinical background has focused on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. I am also in the process of training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy, which allows me to continue deepening my work with trauma and trauma-related symptoms.

My experience in intensive outpatient programs has also shaped the way I practice. I take safety seriously and will always prioritize my clients’ well-being. I believe human life is more important than any job, achievement, promotion, mistake, or expectation. If someone begins to doubt their worth, I will always encourage them to prioritize their life and their safety.
