LGBTQ Counseling
Do You Struggle To Feel Proud About Your LGBTQ+ Identity?
- Have you experienced identity-related discrimination, rejection, or trauma?
- Are you grappling with feelings of shame, anxiety, confusion, or low self-worth as a result?
- Is it difficult for you to feel fully seen and accepted for who you are, even in your most intimate relationships?
Many in the LGBTQ+ community live with the unhealed wounds created by trauma and the ever-looming presence of homophobia, transphobia, and stigma in our society. Daily anxieties and heightened awareness make it difficult to focus, and relationships are often strained due to challenges with trust or unhealthy relationship blueprints.
It can be hard to feel truly accepted, leading to numbing, withdrawal, struggles navigating a full, authentic identity, or a tendency to put up walls. Despite a desire for closeness and connection, many LGBTQ+ folks have been given the message that they’re simply not safe.
At Trauma Healing Therapy, our goal is to change that narrative. By offering an empathetic, nonjudgmental atmosphere where you can explore your identity, goals, and deepest held values, you can begin the process of healing your wounds and empowering your strengths.
Anxiety, Depression, And Emotional Distress Often Have Roots In Trauma
If you struggle to fully understand or embrace your LGBTQ+ identity, you are not alone. You’ve probably been made to feel dismissed or dehumanized and unwelcome to express yourself fully—particularly if you experienced bullying, rejection by your family, or religious/cultural condemnation. Even in supposed “safe” spaces, like the doctor’s office, your workplace, or the sometimes shallowly “progressive” environment of the San Francisco Bay Area, you’ve likely encountered microaggressions and other forms of harassment that perpetuate feelings of shame and anxiety.
The fact of the matter is that LGBTQ+ individuals experience trauma at disproportionate rates as is, with trans folks encountering even higher rates of systemic rejection and abuse that are steadily on the rise.
Yet whether unhealed emotional wounds stem from big, life-altering moments or the build-up of stress over time, your experience is valid. Connection is key on the healing journey, and therapy can give you tools for coping with anxiety, building strong relationships, and affirming your identity.
Our practice is proud to support LGBTQ+ professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area navigating relationship struggles and trauma. With the goal of creating a compassionate space for fostering resilience, growth, and connection, you can witness the vibrancy and acceptance your community has to offer.

Through somatic practices, you will learn to soothe your nervous system and reconnect with your body in a safe, empowering way. When appropriate, you may be given homework or readings to support growth outside of sessions. Our therapists want to collaborate with you every step of the way to harness your strengths and agency as you develop essential skills and perspectives for moving forward with clarity and a renewed sense of self.

Our Approach
Though the treatment process is gentle, trauma-informed, and always individualized to the needs of each client, some of the approaches we use include:
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) – an evidence-based therapy that helps re-process and heal traumatic memories. It uses guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to reduce emotional distress and rewire how the brain stores trauma.
- Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) – an attachment-based approach used in both individual and couples counseling to foster enhanced emotional awareness, understanding, and attunement.
- The Gottman Method – a research-based approach to couples therapy that strengthens relationships by improving communication, conflict resolution, and emotional connection. It focuses on building trust, intimacy, and positive interactions using structured techniques.
- The Flash Technique – an evidence-based intervention that reduces distress from traumatic memories. Unlike traditional methods, it is minimally intrusive and allows processing without conscious engagement, making it a gentler approach to trauma healing.
You’ve faced unique challenges, but healing is absolutely possible with the right guidance and support. Through counseling, you can process the pain of rejection, stigma, and past traumas, stepping into a life where your LGBTQ+ identity is celebrated. You can build relationships rooted in trust, authenticity, and love—all while releasing the shame and fear that once held you back. With the help of a therapist, you can move from surviving to thriving, embracing a life of resilience, connection, and self-acceptance.
Common Concerns About LGBTQ+ Affirming Counseling…
My therapist won’t understand or identify with the unique struggles that the LGBTQ+ community faces.
At Trauma Healing Therapy, we combine a humanistic approach with extensive trauma expertise to address the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community. Our therapists understand the impact of rejection, stigma, and navigating identity in unaccepting environments.
We approach therapy with compassion, ensuring you feel safe and supported as you work through these challenges. Honoring your individual identity and experiences, we aim to create a space where healing and growth are possible—without judgment.
Therapy will take a long time to make a difference.
We understand that you might be worried about making a significant time commitment, especially if you’re a busy working professional like many of our other clients. We will do what we can to create a flexible treatment schedule. And while there is no set timeline for counseling and the process is individualized to the specific needs of each client, we typically find that it takes 12 to 20 sessions to make a noticeable, lasting impact.
If the time commitment is still a concern, note that we offer therapy intensives for clients with scheduling limitations or who want to devote focused, uninterrupted attention to the treatment process. You can find out more information about our intensives here.
I’m concerned that my therapist will share sensitive information with others.
We understand that, as an LGBTQ+ individual, you may have faced environments where your privacy or identity was not fully respected, and we want to assure you that therapy with us is always a safe and confidential process. We are ethically bound to protect your privacy, and apart from rare legal exceptions that we will discuss with you ahead of time, everything you share will stay between us.
You deserve a space where you can be your authentic self without fear, and we are here to provide that with warmth, care, and unwavering respect for your journey.
