Are Symptoms Of Neurodivergence Negatively Affecting Your Life?
- Are you or your child struggling with inattention, impulsivity, emotional dysregulation, and overwhelm?
- Do you or your child tend to procrastinate or have trouble finishing certain tasks?
- Have these issues interfered with your or your child’s academic abilities, work performance, or interactions with others?
- Are you or your child often anxious, irritable, and frustrated by your limitations?
- Or have these symptoms created conflict in your relationships?
Our lives are so fast-paced and busy as is, but in our competitive, high-achieving Bay Area community, the pressure to succeed is especially intense. For those of us whose brains are wired a bit differently—whether certain challenges are present in childhood or become evident later on—daily life can be very overwhelming.
Maybe you’ve wondered if you or your child/teen have Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Or maybe you’ve already gone through the evaluation process to determine a diagnosis.
Even if you have certain skills in place to stay focused and organized, ADHD can take an emotional toll that often goes unrecognized until life feels unmanageable. In some cases, a domino effect occurs when one task goes unchecked, and soon everything feels like it’s spiraling out of control.
Alternatively, you or your child may be having a hard time managing aspects of neurodivergence that are not directly related to ADHD. It’s possible that symptoms of dyslexia, dyscalculia, or other learning disabilities are present. Or perhaps you’re wondering if a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may apply as you or your child/teen struggle with social cues, repetitive behaviors, and the general feeling of being “different” from those around you.
Whether the underlying cause of your concerns is ADHD or something else, therapy offers you a chance to understand your unique brain and how to work with both its strengths and limitations. Working together in counseling, we can build your toolkit for keeping your mental, emotional, and relational health in check even when symptoms of ADHD and other issues arise.
Neurodiversity Is Not A Personal Failure
ADHD affects children, teens, and adults in different ways, and there are a variety of factors that might trigger or intensify symptoms. As people with ADHD grow into adulthood, stressors like academic competition, demanding work environments, constant screen exposure, and our productivity-driven culture can lead to additional challenges. And when certain expectations aren’t met, self-blame is often the response over a sense of self-acceptance.
The thing is that having a neurodiverse brain does not mean you’re lazy or incapable—and you may be experiencing symptoms that you mistake for stress or “slacking off” when it’s really just a matter of better managing your environment and triggers. Working together in therapy, we can work to validate and understand how ADHD and other issues are affecting you or your child/teen and what’s needed to make your life more manageable.

Treatment For ADHD And Neurodiverse Clients Through Trauma Healing Therapy
As therapists, we view symptoms through a trauma-informed lens that seeks to affirm your challenging experiences rather than making them feel like personal failures. While counseling sessions may involve skills building and enhancing emotional regulation, we’ll also do the deeper work of healing some of the shame, anxiety, self-doubt, and traumatic experiences that have been intensified or caused by symptoms of neurodivergence.
Our treatment services are available to clients of all ages (6+) and backgrounds, including those struggling with aspects of ADHD, Autism, and learning disabilities. Since these issues can be particularly disruptive for teens, we maintain a specific focus on working with this population. You can read more on our Teen Counseling page.
What To Expect
Therapy will look different depending on each client’s age, diagnosis, and exposure to counseling.
For children and younger teens, we may need to collaborate with parents and school officials to ensure that progress is being made on developmentally appropriate goals in session, at home, and at school. For older teens and adults, we are more likely to focus on productivity demands and how neurodiversity may be affecting relationship dynamics. And if you’re interested in an assessment for ADHD or other neurodivergence issues, we can connect you with trusted clinicians who are qualified to diagnose.
While this process is individualized to each client’s unique needs and experience, evidence-based methods will be integrated to facilitate skills-building and develop insights for long-term healing. Some of these approaches may include mindfulness, somatic techniques, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to slow down the thought process, as well as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to target core traumas.
What You’ll Gain
Clients that receive ADHD treatment will build skills for improved:
- Executive functioning (organization, time management, and breaking down tasks)
- Emotional regulation
- Mindfulness and grounding techniques
- Nervous system regulation
Communication strategies for school, work, and interpersonal relationships
These skills are taught and practiced in session and can be applied in everyday situations, even particularly stressful ones. Through this practice, you or your child/teen can generate a realistic routine while chipping away at feelings of shame and inadequacy.
ADHD, Autism, learning disabilities, and other forms of neurodivergence do not mean you or your child are failing—these issues just indicate that your brain works differently. With effective support, it is possible to feel calmer, more organized, more confident, and more connected in daily life. As you experience enhanced clarity, focus, and a renewed sense of self-trust, you are likely to see every aspect of life improve.
Common Concerns About Therapy For ADHD And Other Issues…
How will I know that a therapist will be empathetic to my unique experience of ADHD and neurodivergence?
At Trauma Healing Therapy, all of our clinicians are trauma-trained and well-versed in executive functioning issues. And in fact, a few of the therapists on our team are specially trained to work with neurodiverse clients.
We have years of experience under our belt working with clients of all ages who struggle with ADHD, and we thoughtfully match our clinicians with clients based on the expertise that best suits their needs.
Is medication a requirement for ADHD treatment?
Our therapists understand that ADHD medication can be an intimidating prospect for some—many people wonder about side effects and if there are other, non-medical ways to combat symptoms.
We want to be clear that we take a highly collaborative, nonjudgmental approach in this process, regardless of age or severity of symptoms, and with the goal of helping you address concerns and understand your options. If you’d prefer not to go on medication, there are many ways our therapists can help you overcome symptoms of ADHD.
As a parent, what is my role in my child’s treatment process?
Parents—and partners!—play a vital role in therapy for ADHD and other neurodivergent conditions. Our therapists are also here to help you understand symptoms, reduce blame, and learn supportive strategies for reinforcing progress at home.
For children and teens, parents are often a more active part of the counseling process in an effort to support routines, emotional regulation, and academic performance. For adults, we may include partners or caretakers to improve communication, reduce conflict and misunderstandings, and strengthen relationships overall. In sum, we view treatment as a process that is addressed in community, rather than in isolation.
