Curious About If And How Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Is Affecting You?
If you or your child are experiencing challenges with focus, organization, impulsivity, and daily functioning, you may be wondering if there is something deeper going on beneath the surface of your symptoms. Especially when aspects of life like your school performance, productivity at work, and relationships at home are impacted by struggles with your executive functioning, you may be eager to find answers for what is really going on.
Testing for ADHD is available through Trauma Healing Therapy, where we work with children, teens, and adults to lay the foundation for a healthy, well-balanced life.
Testing Is An Essential Aspect Of Diagnosing ADHD
ADHD is a relatively common issue, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that close to 9 percent of American children/adolescents meet the diagnosis for ADHD, while 4.4 percent of adults experience a lifetime prevalence. Unfortunately, some people worry about what it means to experience ADHD symptoms or receive a diagnosis. Especially in the highly competitive academic and professional environment of the Bay Area, there can be stigma or misunderstanding associated with ADHD. Furthermore, it’s common for symptoms to be mischaracterized or overlooked earlier in life, causing many adults to question if their symptoms are due to mental health or, rather, cognitive setbacks associated with ADHD.
But at Trauma Healing Therapy, we believe that knowledge is empowering—the more you know about the way your unique brain works, the more you can adjust your life circumstances to meet your needs, instead of the other way around. ADHD is not a weakness or character flaw, and our testing services can provide clarity, reduce shame, and help distinguish your symptoms.

ADHD Assessments & Evaluations Through Trauma Healing Therapy
Our ADHD evaluations are performed by highly trained and experienced clinicians who can provide a diagnosis and path forward to children, teens, and adult clients of all backgrounds.
To give you an idea about what to expect during the process, ADHD assessments generally follow these protocols:
- Preparation – before the test itself, it may be helpful to gather previous testing results, report cards, IEP/504 plans, accommodations (including glasses, hearing aids, etc.) alongside the completed intake paperwork. Please bring any of the abovementioned (if applicable) at your first testing appointment with your clinician.
- ADHD testing duration – depending on the extensiveness of the evaluation and how many breaks are needed—we have a core evaluation and a longer comprehensive evaluation—assessments typically last between 2.5 and 6 hours, including the clinical interview.
- Parental involvement (for child/teen-specific testing) – while parents are present for initial instructions and welcome to bring any questions or concerns to our team, children complete the evaluation independently so the clinician can observe attention, behavior, and problem-solving as accurately as possible. Parents are welcome to stay in the waiting room during the evaluation and may be called in to offer support as needed.
- Results – the entire testing process takes between 2 and 6 weeks, from start to finish, including time spent collecting data from parents, teachers, school officials, etc. The timeline is based on how quickly information is received and which type of testing is used (either core or comprehensive) to ensure the most accurate, thorough results possible. These results can definitively determine if an ADHD or other diagnosis is present.
- Additional support – ADHD evaluations are performed by psychologists who specialize in these kinds of assessments. We maintain clear boundaries in care, so the same clinician cannot serve as both your therapist and the professional conducting your ADHD or neuropsych testing. This separation ensures unbiased, ethical care tailored to your needs. While these clinicians are not available for ongoing therapy, they are qualified to provide any clinical recommendations and referrals that may be necessary.
Ongoing counseling and other services are also available through our practice, so we invite you to learn more about Our Team to find the therapist best suited to your evaluation results and recommendations.
Self-understanding is power. With the right support, ADHD-related obstacles can make a lot more sense and become a lot more manageable. Rather than living with the frustration, confusion, and shame caused by symptoms you can’t make sense of, the ADHD testing process can move you towards clarity and practical next steps for long-term relief.
Whether you are here on behalf of your child, your partner, your student, or yourself, you’ve come to the right place! Taking this next step can open up a path to improve your life and daily functioning.
Common Questions About ADHD Testing…
How much does ADHD testing cost and is it covered by insurance?
Our fee for ADHD testing is $420 per hour. Straightforward evaluations typically take 7.5-8.5 hours, though more complex cases — depending on the specific tests required and the amount of documentation to review — can require up to 25+ hours. Clients should know thatTrauma Healing Therapy is a fully out-of-network practice and does not accept insurance nor work with insurance directly. However, if your insurance plan includes out-of-network benefits for psychological testing, we may be able to provide a superbill for possible reimbursement when medical necessity criteria are met. Please note that reimbursement is determined by your insurance provider and cannot be guaranteed.

How do I know that an ADHD assessment is right for me/my child?
If you or your child struggle with any of the following challenges, ADHD testing might be right for you: focus, organization, impulsivity, emotional regulation, procrastination, forgetfulness, academic/work performance, or follow-through.
While not all of these symptoms automatically mean ADHD is the cause, the evaluation process can help you understand the difference between executive functioning issues related to ADHD and mental health/mood disorders that share similar symptoms. Why “push through” the obstacles creating stress at home, work, school, and in your relationships when you could have concrete solutions to your struggles?
Can ADHD testing support school or workplace accommodations?
An ADHD evaluation can help clarify whether issues with attention, organization, dysregulation, or executive functioning may be affecting school or work performance. When appropriate, these evaluations may include recommendations for accommodations, adjustments, and/or additional resources at school or at work.
While accommodations are not always guaranteed, testing is always a great option for finding helpful documentation and guidance for next steps.
Can ADHD testing be completed online?
ADHD testing can be completed either virtually or in person, and both options are clinically appropriate. Our testing process is designed to gather the same type of information in either format, including attention, focus, executive functioning, and symptom history.
The best option often depends on comfort and logistics. In-person testing may be preferred if you do not have reliable technology at home, have difficulty staying focused on a computer, or feel you would do better in a structured office setting.
Will this test allow me to get prescribed ADHD medication?
Our assessment can provide a formal ADHD diagnosis that is often very helpful when seeking medication support, but please keep in mind that our clinic does not prescribe medication. We encourage you to share your testing results with your primary medical provider, who will be able to discuss prescription options with you.
